Understanding Headache

A Common Condition That Deserves Serious Attention

A Common Condition That Deserves Serious Attention

Headache is one of the most common neurological symptoms people experience—and while many headaches are mild and temporary, others can be frequent, severe, and significantly impact daily life. At our clinic, we recognise the burden headaches place not just on individuals, but on families, workplaces, and the wider healthcare system.

The Burden of Headache

Chronic headaches can interfere with work, social life, mental health, and overall wellbeing. For some, they become a daily struggle—leading to missed days, reduced productivity, and constant worry about when the next headache will strike. Headache disorders are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, yet many people suffer in silence or go undiagnosed.

Common Headache Types

Common Headache Types

  • Migraine

A neurological condition often presenting with throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, and often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light/sound, or visual disturbances (aura). Migraines can last hours to days and vary in intensity.

  • Tension-Type Headache

The other common headache type, often described as a tight band around the head. Pain is typically mild to moderate, steady, and affects both sides. Stress and fatigue are common triggers.

  • Cluster Headache

A less common but intensely painful headache, usually occurring in cyclical patterns or “clusters.” The pain is sharp, often behind one eye, and may be accompanied by eye watering or nasal congestion.

  • Medication Overuse Headache (MOH)

Caused by frequent use of painkillers or migraine medications. Ironically, the very medicines used for relief can lead to worsening headaches over time if not properly managed.

  • Secondary Headaches

These result from an underlying issue—like sinus infections, high blood pressure, or, rarely, more serious neurological conditions. A thorough assessment helps rule out these causes.
